Can you believe its March already? Spring is just around the corner, and we can finally start putting away those winter boots and heavy jumpers, and take out our lighter cardigans and tennis shoes. It is time to March to Wellness!
What do The Golden Gate Bridge and Chiropractic have in Common?
The Golden Gate Bridge is probably the most famous bridge in the world. But did you know that the reason why its still standing is that it is constantly being maintained? As the Golden Gate Bridge is exposed to the elements and the stress of over 40,000 cars per day, it is also in contact with a high salt content in the air which rusts and corrodes the steel components. Regular check ups on the structure, makes preserving the bridge a full time job.
Staying well and healthy requires regular check ups too. Even though our bodies are not machines, or static structures, they require maintenance for optimum health and well being, and that is what Wellness is all about!
BRAIN AWARENESS WEEK
14 March- 20 March
The human brain is amazing.
25% of our total energy output goes on running our brains, research shows that the function of your spine actually impacts the way your brain works.
Did you know that posture can affect how your brain works? Research shows that the function of your spine influences how your brain communicates with the rest of your body.
If your spine is not moving properly it makes it harder for your brain to accurately recognize what is going in your body. This then impacts how your body controls your movements. Spinal alignment and posture is important for maintaining a healthy spine.
A typical, healthy one houses some 200 billion nerve cells, which are connected to one another via hundreds of trillions of synapses. Each synapse functions like a microprocessor, and tens of thousands of them can connect a single neuron to other nerve cells. In the cerebral cortex alone, there are roughly 125 trillion synapses, which is about how many stars fill 1,500 Milky Way galaxies.
Your brain knows things that you don't even know it knows!
Whether or not we know how to read music or play an instrument, our brains are able to figure out a musical scale, based on our expectations.
With only giving a few cues, Bobby Mc Ferrin demonstrates how we are able to understand the pentatonic scale (a scale used widely in traditional and formal music), and how our brains can predict the pattern of the progression based on expectations.
Wellness is the state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, and not just the absence of disease. It is important to preserve an optimal level of wellness to live life to its fullest.
This state of balance and wholeness matters because everything we do and every emotion we feel relates to our over all well-being. And in turn, our well-being affects our actions and emotions. It is an ongoing cycle.
So how can we achieve and maintain this high level of wellness? The solution is to focus on your whole body, including your mind and your spirit as opposed to just getting rid of temporary pain or disease.
The good news is that there are many ways that you can take care of yourself to focus on the importance of wellness. Here are some of our tips:
* Eat a clean and well balanced diet,
* Take time for a long and restful sleep,
* Cultivate loving relationships with family members and friends,
* Remember to move on a regular basis! Regular exercise offers wonderful benefits for your body and mind,
* Don't forget about your regular chiropractic checkups,
* Enjoy a good belly laugh at least once a day
Just like with the Golden Gate Bridge, it is important to constantly maintain your body to keep it strong and beautiful.
